Since you used the word toner, I suppose you’re considering color laser printers. I made a price comparison between several in the $500-$1000 range. Usually, the bigger the cartridge, the better, since the price of a cartridge has mostly to do with things other than the toner. I am very happy with my HP 3600DN CLP I bought a year and a half ago. I occasionally run several hundred prints in a couple days when I have a newsletter to print. Usually, the more you spend on the printer, and this goes especially for ink jets for anyone reading this considering ink jets, the less you spend on ink and toner.
Your satisfaction with the printer will have as much to do with the paper you select as with anything else. Thin paper just has a hard time. Get the thickest part-recycled paper you can handle.
I will edit my answer if I can find the cost comparison spreadsheet I made before.
Don’t be like me and forget to purchase the printer via GoodShop, which will give a portion of the price to charity. I bought my printer at Staples, and I could have gone to Staples online via GoodShop, had the thing delivered for free, and also had $10 of their profit go to my favorite charity, all for the same price.

"A lot of prints" can have several definitions. If your budget allows for a good color laser, that is the way to go. Your output will be faster, text sharper and overall cost per page cheaper.
I bought a Samsung CLP300 a year ago for $80 at Staples after $150 rebate. A set of 4 toners was $70 at http://ccs-digital.com but I am still on the original set.
I also have a Ricoh CL1000 which is a higher end (I paid $300 for it). The toner cartridges are supposed to last for 6,500-10,000 pages. My black did run out and I bought a refill on ebay for $50. My only complaint is that it’s noisy. The cartridges make a banging noise when they change the color. It’s rated at about 32 pages per minute in one color. Two colors would be about 16 ppm. All 4 would be 8.
You could also go with an inkjet or two if you’re looking to save up front costs. If you’re looking for a reliable all-in-one inkjet with good quality output, a solid warranty and inexpensive ink, look at the Epson workforce or NX series.
The best warranty in the industry. For a year, Epson will express-ship a replacement and pick up the old one. They have also made things easier for their customers by standardizing their cartridges. Most of their printers use one of two types. The three-color plus black use T069 (CX5000 CX6000 CX7000 CX7400 CX7450 CX8400 CX9400FAX CX9475Fax NX100 NX105 NX400 Workforce 30/40/500/600 and C120) and the 5-color plus black use T078 (R260 R280 R380 RX580 RX595 and RX680).
I get cartridges for my Epsons from http://ccs-digital.com for under $3 each which hold 50% more ink than standard cartridges.
