my opinion:

-i think if you do not care about the size of the camera, canon S2 IS gives you the best bang for your buck.
-if you want a slim camera with ~10x optical zoom, panasonic has one, Panasonic DMC-TZ1 (look up reviews from dpreview for example)
-for both the cameras above, it comes with image stabilization, which is a big thing now
-if you want to get an ultra-compact camera with (reasonably) fantastic video capability, get the casio ex-z750. this is a 7.2 mp camera and it records videos in mpeg4 format, and with a 2 gig card, you can record video over an hour long at 640×480 resolution. the higher megapixel lets you zoom and crop further, so to me, it is equivalent to having a little more optical zoom (though not really) compared to the exact same camera with lower mps.

-once you make your decision, do go to a nearby camera store and get a feel for what the camera is like before you order it, online or not

Look online first: try eBay, yahoo shopping, or Froogle to compare prices. Even if you don't want to buy from an online store the latter two sites will let you see prices from regular big box stores. Also check out online discount sites like slickdeals.net to see if there are any good coupons/sales.

Depending on your needs and budget. Try to investigate how much its ink cartridge. Ink cartridges is very expensive sometimes and you may be trapped on buying it forever even though refilling may be done but I don't recommend it.
